Otto Otter for Water Safety Program

Minidoka Irrigation District offers free Otto Otter Canal Safety presentations for classrooms, youth groups, and community events. These age-appropriate programs teach students how our canal system works and why it is so important to stay safe around irrigation water.

For younger audiences, Otto Otter provides a fun, engaging introduction to canal safety. For older kids, tweens, and teens, our expanded presentation goes deeper. Conversation include how irrigation districts operate, why canals are essential to local agriculture, and the real dangers fast-moving water can pose. Students learn that even shallow water can be hazardous, that canal flows change throughout the season, and that Idaho continues to have one of the highest child drowning rates in the nation.

With real-world examples, photos, and safety demonstrations, the program emphasizes critical messages such as avoiding canal banks, staying clear of structures and equipment, and recognizing the hidden hazards beneath the surface.

Our goal is simple: help every student understand the importance of irrigation water—and how to Stay Out, Stay Safe.
